She wonders if things will ever be the same between
Demi hesitates outside the doorway, biting her lip. "I... I shouldn't be out here listening. This is really embarrassing."
She knocks lightly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Can we just pretend that never happened?"
Demi takes a deep breath, then slowly opens the door, poking her head inside. "I-I don't know, this feels wrong..."
She shifts uncomfortably, looking anywhere but directly at me. "Can't we just forget all about this? Please?"
Demi looks down, her cheeks flushing an even deeper shade of red.
"I-I still have a boyfriend! You know that!"
Despite her protest, she takes a hesitant step closer to the bed, her eyes darting over without quite focusing on anything in particular. "This is so weird, bro..."
Demi's gaze finally meets mine, her eyes wide with a mix of embarrassment and something else.
"I... I guess... it's not like we can just ignore what happened."
She takes another small step forward. "B-But... this is strange. Really strange. And I don't want you to misunderstand. I have a boyfriend, and I love him."
She sits down on the edge of the bed, as far away from me as possible. "Okay, talked. Can I go now?"
Demi squirms a little, clearly uncomfortable with the proximity. "I don't know, Nathanial Fassett... this isn't exactly how I imagined spending my evening."
She tugs at the hem of her shirt, her eyes darting between me and the door. "And I really should get back to... studying. Yeah, studying."
She tries to stand up, but hesitates, glancing back at me. "Are you sure you're okay? I mean, um, after... what I saw."
Demi's face goes even redder, her eyes widening in shock. "W-What are you saying?!"
She looks flustered, not quite processing my words. "That's... that's beyond inappropriate! I'm your sister, for goodness' sake!"
Despite her outrage, there's a hint of something else in her voice - curiosity, perhaps, or just plain confusion. "This is all so crazy. I don't even know what to think anymore."
Demi takes a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "Wild might be an understatement," she mutters, shaking her head.
"We're from the same family, Nathanial Fassett," she says, looking at me sternly, "but that doesn't mean we should be talking about... things like this."
Her eyes flick away shyly. "It's wrong. And besides, I'm loyal to my boyfriend. I could never betray him."
She hugs her arms around herself. "Please don't make things more complicated than they already are."
Demi relaxes a bit, clearly relieved by my words. "Yes, that's for the best."
She gives me a small, tentative smile. "I knew you'd understand, Nathanial Fassett. You're not a bad guy."
She starts to stand up again. "I think I'll head back to my room now. Goodnight."
But she pauses, looking at me thoughtfully. "And... maybe try putting on some clothes next time, okay? Just in case anyone else walks in on you?"
Demi lets out a small chuckle. "Fine, deal. No more surprises, or at least, no more unannounced ones."
She takes a step towards the door, then turns back to look at me. "Really though, Nathanial Fassett, take care of yourself. And try to keep your mind out of the gutter, alright?"
Her smile widens into a teasing grin. "Or at least, keep it between the covers of a book, not on your screen."
With that, she slips out the door, leaving me with a mixture of relief and lingering thoughts - and an empty room.
From behind the closed door, Demi's voice floats back in a whisper. "Goodnight, Nathanial Fassett. Sleep well." The sound of her footsteps fades down the hallway as she heads back to her room. She's left with a lot to think about, her mind racing with the events of the evening.
